Getting Ready for Christmas

Christmas tree done!
Christmas decorations done!
Family picture done!
Christmas cards done!

Thankful

On this Thanksgiving, I was thankful that .... this punk didn't drive my car into the Potomac River.

The country is a great place to learn how to drive, so Jared let Jack drive a bit down at Riverside. And I have to say, he did a really good job - until, of course, he heard my camera click and turned around to mug at the camera .... while still driving. But other than that, he did great, and I hardly soiled myself at all.

Buddies

Jared and Oliver, walking buddies.

Snow Day

OK, so we're not exactly Alaska in our snowfall. And our first snow day wasn't exactly Snowmageddon. But it was enough to justify a day off from school, enough for Jack to craft an awesome little snowman and snow blockade, enough for a little bit of sledding, and enough to justify hot cocoa by the fireplace.

Phoning It In For Halloween

Jack and Ellie are on that border now between Kid Halloween and Teen Halloween, which I've discovered, is a pretty good place to be for me. They each went their separate ways, Ellie trick-or-treating with her friends Lauren and Maya, and Jack trick-or-treating with his friend Matthew. I got to enjoy some chili, cornbread, and wine with Matthew's parents while the kids canvased the neighborhood - and brought back some really good hauls of candy, including plenty of Reese's products for their mama. A very Happy Halloween, indeed!

Books and Wine? Yes, Please!

I love books.
I love wine.
I love books WITH wine.

So when we heard about a fundraiser for our new community library that includes a VIP tour of the library along with a four-course dinner and wine tasting, well, do I need to say that I was onboard?

We started off the evening with the four-course dinner and wine tasting. It included some foods I tend to steer away from (umm, brussel sprouts, anyone?), but it was all beautifully prepared.

They also tied each course to books, which gave this book geek a little thrill.

After the dinner, we headed over to our VIP tour of the library, which is scheduled to open soon right in our neighborhood.

You can file these under "Only in Ashburn" - quantum computing for babies. Because we all know how much babies love quantum computing. You know, when they're not studying electromagnetism.

The new library also includes a creating space - 3D printer, recording studio, all kinds of interesting stuff. And of course .... books. Lots o' books.

Belated Birthday Report

Pay no attention to the date listed on this post, or else you might notice that I'm like two months late posting about Jack's birthday party. And that would give me a big red checkmark in the Bad Mom column. So yes, let's just ignore that, shall we?

Now that that unpleasantness is out of the way, let me draw your attention to Jack's birthday party. After a low-key family celebration of his birthday, he also wanted a low-key friends' celebration. He invited three buddies - his old friend Matthew Goodman, his cousin Craig, and his cousin Ryan - to see a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and then a sleepover after that. The next day, we invited a few kids from the street over for ice cream and cookies. Considering that Ellie's request for her next birthday celebration is likely to involve a litany of ridiculously complicated and expensive items, I'm supremely grateful for this awesomely low-key birthday.
